In October, $5,000 worth of scholarships will be awarded to Michigan students. Applicants are asked to submit a persuasive message that shows how you would convince young drivers to reduce distractions while driving.

Finalists will be notified by October 1st, 2019 and winners will be announced the week of October 22nd, 2019.

Messages may be in the form of a video, graphic or Tweet that resonates with teens and influences their driving behavior.

Entries will be judged and critiqued on the following factors:

  • Ability to persuade others, especially teen drivers, to stop texting while driving.
  • Ability to grab the attention of your friends, peers and family.
  • A clear and understandable message.
  • Demonstration of your personal creativity and ingenuity.

Miyla (Michigan Youth Leadership Academy)

The Michigan Youth Leadership Academy (MiYLA), hosted by the Michigan State Police (MSP), provides teens ages 14-15 with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and build positive relationships with law enforcement officers. The teens will spend five days at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing, where they will receive instruction from MSP troopers as well as officers from their hometown police department. The goal of MiYLA is to form a foundation of responsibility, respect and trust, to benefit the teens, law enforcement officers, and the community.

College and Career Readiness: Navigation and Preparation Workshops

This workshop will allow participants to explore various career, employment and transfer options.

Participants will 

  • Develop an education focus to select future careers
  • Acquire knowledge to transition and transfer to another college/university
  • Explore career pathways that lead to employment opportunities.

Provide opportunities for young ladies between ages 11-14

Exposing young ladies to math, science, leadership, and non-traditional careers

Assisting the young ladies in the importance of community service

Assisting the young ladies in recognizing that dreams and aspirations do come true by avoiding the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, peer pressure, and negative influences

Application must include a report card or transcript, a letter of recommendation from school personnel, and one letter of recommendation from minister, adult mentor, or community leader.

Applications are due by Thursday, June 13, 2019
