March GEM Award Winner - Larry Lyman

Larry Lyman - March GEM Winner

Larry Lyman, Unified Sports Coach, Wayne Memorial

Larry’s statement:  Trying to think of "one" reason why I enjoy working for Wayne-Westland Community Schools is a bit of a challenge. Having the opportunity to work once again with High School Special Ed students as they make the transition from high school into adult life has been amazing--it's always been my passion. Working to restart our Unified Champions program with the Michigan Special Olympics has been an added bonus. As a teacher and a coach nothing motivates you more than the look on a Special Olympians face when they hit the winning basket or score the winning goal-it really can light up a gym.

Cory Gildersleeve’s, Principal statement:  Larry Lyman has done an amazing job at Wayne Memorial High School as both a teacher and a coach. He goes above and beyond most every day in leading and guiding our scholars. He was especially dynamic most recently in his leadership with our unified basketball program. He worked hard to make sure that was an experience that our student-athletes will never forget.
