Multilingual Learner Services

At Wayne-Westland Community School District, the Multilingual Learner Services is committed to the following vision:

To provide every Multilingual Learner (ML) an impactful and inclusive educational experience including equitable, high quality, rigorous content and instruction.

Michigan English Language Proficiency

The goal of the ML program is to provide students an education that will strengthen their understanding, speaking, reading, and writing of academic English. Students receive support as necessary based on their WIDA level.

While the rate of English language development varies widely from student to student, many students exit the English Language program in 3-7 years. It can take 1-3 years for students to develop everyday English and 5-7 years to develop academic and content English.

Wayne-Westland multilingual learners will have access to content/academic instruction, with modification and supports as necessary to ensure that the students will be successful academically and be prepared for grade promotion and graduation. Our goal is to provide inclusive services for all multilingual learners.

The WIDA Access assessment is given to students in February/March.   To find out more information, please visit the WIDA website.

WIDA Screener

The WIDA Screener is given to students who report a language other than English on the Home Language Survey at the time of registration. The level of services provided to each student is based on the proficiency level of the WIDA Screener.

WIDA Parent Guide

How can my child prepare for the WIDA ACCESS test?

Although your child does not need to prepare for this test, parents are welcome to use the resources below:

  • The Test Demo is a series of videos that explain how students will take the online test and interact with the test platform.
  • The Sample Items provide students, parents, and educators with a better understanding of the ACCESS for ELLs Online assessment that is based on the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards. These are not items that will appear on the test, but they provide an example of the items that students will see on the test. Please click on the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 button. To access and view the Sample Items, a Chrome browser must be used.
  • The Test Practice items are designed to allow students to experience taking the assessment online and to experiment with the features available to them during the actual assessment.
