Dear Wayne-Westland Community Students, Staff and Families,
Happy Sunday. I hope you all are enjoying the end of mid-winter break. Here are this week's updates.
As you may have heard, Wayne County Health Department rescinded its Emergency Order requiring face masks in educational settings effective immediately. Individuals may now choose whether or not to wear a mask in District buildings. This decision was made after the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services updated its face mask guidance, encouraging school districts to set their own guidelines.
In addition, the Centers for Disease Control has updated their protocols and masks are no longer required on school buses. In the revised guidance, the CDC clarifies that the TSA mask mandate for public transportation does not apply to public or private schools, including early care and education/child care programs. CDC is making this change to align with updated guidance that no longer recommends universal indoor mask wearing in K-12 schools and early education settings in areas with a low or medium COVID-19 Community Level. School systems at their discretion may choose to require that people wear masks on buses or vans.
Wayne-Westland Community Schools has followed the Wayne County Health Department's guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our District values the tenets of respectful interactions and is confident that our students, families and staff will treat one another with respect for their personal choice. Staff and students will also have the discretion of wearing a mask or not.
We continue to follow the recommendations of our local health department and experts. While masks are no longer required, we still encourage our students, teachers, staff and visitors to wear masks when inside school buildings. In alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services guidance, the Wayne County Health Department strongly recommends a layered approach to COVID-19 prevention that includes wearing masks in public indoor spaces, social distancing, frequent handwashing, increased ventilation, and vaccination. Our community has demonstrated incredible resilience and commitment since the beginning of this pandemic. This partnership and collaborative work continue to make a difference in our school district.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we strive to create the best possible learning environment for your child. Working together, we have provided an environment throughout the pandemic for scholars to grow academically, socially and emotionally. We remain committed to providing you with updates, but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (734) 419-2010 or superintendent@wwcsd.net.
