Dear Wayne-Westland School Community:

Weekly Letter to Students, Parents & Staff

As part of the district’s ongoing commitment to communicate frequently with our community during this time of change, we want to provide a brief update on several important issues related to transportation services.

The district has requested proposals from vendors to determine if privatizing the transportation services would better serve our students and their families. Multiple vendors have responded to the request for proposals.

As we discussed the process of working with specialized transportation companies, we also heard from multiple stakeholders and our bargaining groups. Our goal in this process continues to be providing consistent transportation for our students at a reasonable cost to the district. We understand the importance of this decision and its potential impact on our students, families, and the community.

In determining the next steps, the district has decided to step back and attempt to work with the union to find a shared solution to the transportation problems. Over the past several weeks, the bargaining group has expressed a desire to collaborate with the district to identify ways to control costs and increase consistency. We are looking forward to continuing that discussion in hopes of determining a direction that resolves the ongoing concerns.

We remain dedicated to working collaboratively with the community, the current union, and all stakeholders to improve our transportation services continuously. Thank you for your ongoing support of the Wayne-Westland Community Schools.

Sincerely,

John Dignan, Ed.D.
Superintendent
