February GEM Award Winner - Nancy Kelly

Kristen's Statement: "I have the privilege of being able to collaborate with Wayne-Westland families, staff, students, and community agencies in advocating for the unique needs of students with autism.  I am honored to receive this award, especially during Autism Acceptance Month!"

Anne Kennell's Statement:  “Kristen is a valuable asset to our department. She has gone above and beyond for many at the elementary level. She takes initiative to ensure students are getting the support they need, as well as the staff that work with them. Her work ethic, dedication, and outstanding performance are invaluable. We are fortunate to have her on our team.” 

Donna Shiemke, Informational Media Center Clerk at Roosevelt

Donna's Statement: "What I like about working for Wayne Westland is the wonderful staff I have met over the years.  But the most important are the students.  I love to see their smiling faces and excitement when they come to the  library and pick out a book."

Mark Watson's Statement:  “I always say that it is important to surround yourself with positive people. Well, we definitely hit that positivity standard with Mrs. Shiemke. She is the shining light of positivity and we are very lucky that she is part of our Roosevelt-McGrath community. If you have ever had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Shiemke, you know that she models positivity, kindness, care and flexibility each and every day. 

As our Informational Media Center Clerk, Mrs. Shiemke creates a wonderful learning environment in our Library. The library is the learning hub of our school. She does an amazing job at supporting the literacy development of our students and other students in the District each day. In addition, she manages spontaneous challenges with grace every time. She will often be given a challenge of changing her schedule and/or location of where she supports students. She always has a positive outlook and does all that she can to help with any challenge. 

Mrs. Shiemke is an amazing human being. We appreciate her so much and we are so happy that she is being recognized with a GEM award.  Congratulations Mrs. Shiemke.” 

Jennifer Akerley, Behavior Coordinator at Franklin

Jennifer's Statement: "I think the thing that I enjoy most about working for Wayne-Westland, is the relationships that I have formed over the years, both with staff and students. Also, the leadership that I have worked with has been amazing, always supportive and welcoming! I grew up in this community, all of my children went to school here and so Wayne-Westland feels like family."

Deena Pringle's Statement:  “Mrs. Akerley is professional towards adults and students. She is friendly, ethical and supports students. She is highly sought after by students because of her positive and calm approach. She is willing to fill a need whenever she sees it and is a team player. She works tirelessly to support students with challenging behaviors and does not hesitate to extend support to teachers.” 

Stephanie Mazzon, Chemistry Teacher at John Glenn

Stephanie's Statement: "I really enjoy working with my coworkers in science at JGHS.   I also enjoy teaching the periodic table to all of my students!  The periodic table is one of my very favorite things!"

Scott Kalley's Statement:  “Mrs. Mazzon is somebody who goes above and beyond with all of her students. She is consistently going above and beyond, and exemplifies the true essence of dedication and passion in teaching. Her unwavering commitment to her students' growth and success is truly commendable. Whether it's spending extra hours to provide personalized support, implementing innovative teaching methods, or fostering a nurturing learning environment, Mrs. Mazzon consistently exceeds expectations.”

Keith's Statement: "The sense of community I felt here at Wayne-Westland was what really made me want to make this the place I spent my career.  The environment of learning has always been one I thrived in.  We are always learning so what better way to contribute to a community than to be a part of the education system?"
