Dear Wayne-Westland Families,
The safety of our students and school communities is always our top priority. One important way to help keep children and teens safe is by practicing safe firearm storage. To help protect Michigan families-especially children-from firearm-related tragedies, a state law requiring secure storage of firearms went into effect on February 13, 2024.
Safe firearm storage can help prevent and minimize the risk of firearm-related deaths and injuries. Below are practices that can help reduce firearm-related incidents.
Store firearms safely: Always keep firearms unloaded and stored in a tamper-proof container that is inaccessible to children and unauthorized adults.
Store ammunition separately: Keep ammunition in a locked, tamper-proof container, stored apart from firearms.
Use safety devices: Trigger or cable locks can add another layer of protection by preventing a firearm from firing. Safe Firearm Storage Fact Sheet.)
Wayne-Westland Community Schools is committed to supporting families in these efforts. Free cable locks are available in the front office of every school-please stop by to pick one up if you need it.
In addition, it is essential to have age-appropriate conversations with children and teens about the dangers of firearms and what to do if they ever encounter one.
Together, we can protect our children and our school communities by safely storing firearms to prevent tragedies from ever occurring. Thank you for being a partner in these efforts.
Sincerely,
Catherine Cost, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent
